Your Summer Flower Guide: Keeping Blooms Fresh in the Heat
Share
With the weather getting warmer, your flowers may need a little extra love and care. Just like how we switch to lighter clothes, cooler drinks and SPF+++, our flowers too need a little change in their care routine.
A little extra step in how you care for your flowers can significantly help them stay longer in your vase. Having cared for flowers on the daily, we’ve learnt a few tips on what works best for them as the seasons change! Continue reading to understand how to increase the lifespan of your flowers and which flowers beat the heat best.
Choosing the Right Summer Flowers
Not all flowers respond to heat the same way. Some are naturally more resilient and hold up beautifully even in warmer conditions.
During summer, we love working with:
-
Chrysanthemums
-
Anthuriums
-
Orchids
-
Carnations
-
Alstroemeria
These blooms are not only long-lasting but also hold their structure and colour well, making them perfect for the season.
Keep It Cool, Always
Flowers and heat don’t get along.
Place your bouquet in the coolest part of your home, away from direct sunlight, windows, or appliances that give off heat. Even a small shift in placement can significantly extend the life of your flowers.
If you have air conditioning, your flowers will thank you. However, never place them directly under the fan! We may enjoy that cool breeze on our face but the fan dries the flower out and causes them to wilt quicker!
Hydration is Everything
In summer, flowers get thirsty much faster than usual.
-
Change the water every day
-
Trim stems slightly every 1-2 days
-
Ensure no leaves sit below the waterline
Fresh, clean water makes all the difference. It prevents bacterial growth and keeps stems absorbing water efficiently.
A Quick Refresh Trick
If your flowers look slightly tired, don’t worry, they can often bounce back.
Re-trim the stems and place them in fresh water. Let them rest in a cool space for a few hours. You’ll be surprised how much they revive.
For Vase Arrangements
If you’ve received a vase arrangement, avoid moving flowers around too much. Instead:
-
Top up water daily on the floral foam, a cup or two should do the trick
-
Keep the arrangement in a shaded, cool spot
-
Remove any wilting stems gently to maintain overall freshness
A Note on Seasonal Availability
Summer also means certain flowers may not always be available, or may vary slightly in size and bloom.
At Urth, we work closely with what’s freshest and in season so while your bouquet will always follow the chosen colour palette and feel, the exact flowers may vary. We promise it will always be thoughtfully designed and beautifully balanced
Why Summer Flowers Feel Different
A quiet table, a glass of something cold, summer breeze through the window, a great book and the flowers that bring a sense of calm into the space, now isn’t that the perfect evening!
